PKM Weekly 2024-08-10
Hi Everyone,
Another week is over and meet again. The Olympics are coming to an end, and the football season is about to restart. This week we have updates from:
A video of this week’s episode is included below:
CAPACITIES
Why we limit customization – Plugins, integrations, settings, and more.
Why we don’t offer everything. The devs recently posts an article on why they do not allow a free-for-all in terms of customisation.
Capacities is a personal tool. It’s the app you work in, it’s where you are creative and productive. It’s the Studio for your Mind. And because this is so personal, it needs to feel like an extension of yourself. It needs to feel natural and beautiful. There should be no friction.
So, there are a lot of arguments for allowing you to customize your tools. And we allow you to make some decisions – many, to be honest. And these customizations are important. Nevertheless, you cannot customize everything. We purposely make a few decisions for you because customization also comes with a high cost.
The article can be found here.
Ever wanted someone to fill in your properties for you? Let the AI Assistant do just that!
In this video, Beth shows us how we can use the power of AI to autofill properties and other fields.
To Object or Not to Object?
OP asks a great question. I’ve been diving into organizing my space and I’m hitting a bit of a roadblock. How do you decide what’s worth turning into an object and what isn’t? For example, take house plants. It makes sense to add properties like:
Species (e.g., Monstera, Fiddle Leaf Fig),
Watering Schedule (e.g., Weekly, Bi-weekly)
Sunlight Needs (e.g., Full Sun, Partial Shade)
But on the other hand, couldn’t this just be done in a table on a page? Sure, it’s less convenient without dropdowns and the ability to filter easily, but is it worth the extra effort to set up objects? I’m curious about your approaches and thought processes. How do you balance the convenience of dropdowns and detailed properties against the simplicity of tables or lists? What criteria do you use to make this decision?

LOGSEQ
DB Closed Alpha
Been a couple of weeks it seems that I mentioned it, but as far as I understand, the DB closed alpha has not yet started and will be “starting soon”. I am not too sure why there has been a delay or how many people will be part of the closed alpha and how long this will last. Unfortunately, as we have encountered before, sometimes the communication from the Logseq team leaves much to be desired.
Zotero 7 and Logseq Connection (Plugin)
@Ben recently updated @logseq-zoterolocal-plugin. The update now allows us to connect locally to Zotero 7 (and above) and pull our items into Logseq without needing to sync with Zotero Cloud. Zotero 7 is out! The plugin allows to:
Connects directly for faster searches (no cloud needed)
Supports flexible template customization
Tracks items already in your graph Note: Zotero 7 must be running in background.
Data integrity Issues – Sync
OP posts (GitHub issue) I was typing and then suddenly everything was gone, I tried to hit the refresh option, but it did not work. How do get a backup from the files stored in the cloud? I am a paying customer, what is the best way to proceed here?
Could be user error or system error, but which ever, it is quite concerning.
TANA
I was debating whether to remove Tana from this week’s post as I am afraid the radio silence continues. Having said that, I was able to find a couple bits of, hopefully, interesting news.
Expect More Rapid Updates
In the midst of silence (the last announcement by the Tana team was 22 July), this week, Stian commented “I can tell you that the mobile app is the main focus for more than 50% of our team at this point (and has been so for a while). Now that people are back from vacation, expect more rapid updates. Link” Of course, the immediate rebuttal was ““more rapid updates” implies updates were at least somewhat rapid before, which is not the case.”
Let’s wait and see what happens. Even though, I think I said this last week, and the one before.
Unlocking Potential: The Intersection of Productivity and Wealth Building
An interesting article by Son Nun that looks at Unlocking Potential: The Intersection of Productivity and Wealth Building
In an era where efficiency and financial independence are paramount, the tools we choose to manage our lives can significantly influence our success. Among the latest innovations in productivity applications is Tana, a note-taking app that marries elements from popular platforms like Roam, Notion, and Airtable. As more users flock to Tana, it raises the question: why is this app capturing so much attention? Meanwhile, the pursuit of wealth remains a universal aspiration, with many individuals searching for the right strategies to build financial stability from the ground up.
Tana isn’t just about taking notes; it’s about fostering connections between thoughts, which can be instrumental in both personal and professional development. This kind of interconnected thinking is crucial when it comes to innovative problem-solving—an essential skill in today’s fast-paced job market.
