PKM Weekly - 2024-10-12
A look at the latest Personal Knowledge Management PKM news from the past week.
Hi Everyone,
Short and sweet intro this week, no F1, no Premier League football, still hot and humid but the good thing is that my better half and I have found a nice series to watch - When Calls the Heart. If you have not seen it yet, I can definitely recommend it. We did also watch Nobody Wants This, was OK-ish.
Video of this week's update:
CAPACITIES
Ask Me Anything (AMA)
The Capacities are currently / have just finished their very first team off-site get together and have been recording an AMA session with questions from the community. There were a lot of good questions posted here, and the recording of the AMA should be released soon so do keep an eye out on the Capacities YouTube channel.
Capacities as a Bookmark / Website manager?
mcdjustin thought up a Weblink query for finding primary, top-level domains that are saved in you Capacities. Using the ends with modifier on a URL property filter group, you can filter out all of the subpages and complex URLs to essentially make a quick snapshot of the core sources in your weblink collection.
Of course, you could also expand on it to only filter out certain tags or collections, and sort it alphabetically by name or even number of backlinks (especially useful if you're using Capacities for research)
LOGSEQ
Better Asset Management coming to Logseq DB Version?
It seems that the Logseq team are working on improving the asset management as part of the Logseq DB Version. From the image below it looks like we will be able to have see a repository of all our assets and filter / sort / search on them. A great improvement for sure.
Joint Power of Notes with Logseq + Obsidian
I find both tools incredibly powerful and useful. But like many other tools, both have their pros and cons. In my humble opinion, Logseq is most powerful in journaling and list-based notes like todos, for example, and Obsidian excels at taking rich notes and has a powerful plugin ecosystem. Of course, there are many more different flavors and variations. I don't want to dig deeper into this because this blog post is actually about how you can get the power of both with one simple trick I want to show you here.

Obsidian vs Roam Research vs LogSeq vs RemNote
A common question when it comes to PKM, which app should I use. Well, Noduslabs has prepared an article. “If you are using a personal knowledge management system (PKM), you probably know about all the tools that exist on the market today. However, which one should you choose? Obsidian or Roam Research? Or maybe the open-source LogSeq?”
TANA
Tana Hiring
It's business as usual here, with 95% of all efforts going towards mobile until we get it done. It's tough work but everyone here knows this boat is not going to shore until we are done. To help with this, we're expanding our Android team and are looking for a ship-worthy candidate. As a stop-gap measure, we have voluntold Olav to brush up on his Android coding skills. He is not happy about it, says he's more useful talking to investors or something but hopefully it won't be for long... we really need the best help we can find here. So, if you know someone talented (and crazy) enough to consider joining the crew, please let them know of the opportunity, and send word to us so we know you sent them!
Tana are also looking for Applied AI developers. If you know any, do get in touch with the Tana team.
Why I Recommend Tana vs Notion (Personal Productivity)
CombiningMinds Knowledge Management & Productivity posts another great video, which in his words “This video didn't go quite as planned. While helping a friend set up her Notion workspace, I couldn't help but bring up Logseq, and then we did a deep-dive into Tana. As much as I appreciate Notion, Tana’s approach to organizing information has a lot of advantages that are hard to ignore. In this raw video, I share why Tana's structure might be a better fit for long-term organization, even if we don’t dive deep into its features. A few hiccups along the way, but I hope you enjoy the insights.”
How do you use Tana if no mobile app? (Android)
OP asks: I really would love to use Tana, but no mobile App makes it unusable. How can I check notes, Todo if I'm not at the Notebook?
How do you use it? The Tana Capture also doesn't recognize Tags nor @ so... You capture and then sometime later go to your Notebook and review /fix everything?
The slightly simple answer is that you either don’t or find workarounds.
OBSIDIAN
The 7 (or 8) plugins I actually use in Obsidian
It has been a while since I posted an Obsidian related video so I thought I would do a quick video of the 7 plugins I use on a daily basis.
How to Sync Obsidian Across All Your Devices (Including Free Methods)
I liked the idea of Obsidian, but before I started using it I had to make I could sync my vaults to any device I have. I went scorched earth on subscriptions a while back, so I wanted to figure out how to do it without a new one. A few bucks a month isn’t much, but it quickly adds up when every app known to man requires a subscription.
Read more here on how to Sync Obsidian Across All Your Devices (Including Free Methods).
Obsidian October 2024 — Critique your plugin
I mentioned Obsidian October in last weeks publication, and this week we have the first plugin critique video by the Obsidian dev team.
Set up a POWERFUL Obsidian Task and Time Management System with Morgen
Looking on how to use Obsidian and Morgen to create a Task and Time Management System? Check out this video where John walks us through their set up and explains how we can create something similar for an optimised task and time management system.

Anytype
Is Anytype safe enough to keep notes? I’ve been using Anytype for a while now and spent quite a bit of time organizing my notes in a way that makes sense to me. But honestly, I’m still worried that one day it might crash or I might lose all my data, and that would totally stress me out…

Interested in AI and PKM?
The check this new project out by Sarah. It's a place to explore PKM + AI. I'm passionate about making AI more accessible to those in productivity space. Artificial intelligence is here, and it's not going away. We need to be thinking deeply about how AI fits into the PKM world.
That’s all for this week. Thank you very much in advance for reading and I look forward to bringing you more PKM news next week.
