PKM Weekly - 2024-12-14
A look at the latest Personal Knowledge Management PKM news from the past week.
Hi Everyone,
Another week has gone by and as we approach the end of the year, lots of apps are giving it their all in a final push before (I hope) taking some well-deserved time off and taking a breather.
Video of this week's update:
CAPACITIES
Capacities v1.43.47
A new version was released early last week which implemented a couple of improvements and fixes. Changelog.
Improvements
Improved design of the inline link edit menu, which should now be easier to use.
In the object selection menu (e.g. in multi-select properties), the search bar is automatically focused to minimize friction.
When turning blocks into objects, in the case of long texts the block is moved into the object that is about to be created.
Fixes
Fixed an export error where only the first page of a document was exported.
The URL field of the inline link edit menu is now automatically focused, making it easier to type.
Fixed a rendering issue where the table column / row handles were displayed below the selection.
Using Capacities for daily journaling?
OP asks, I'm considering making a separate object for journal entries. One date per entry, so each entry is mapped to a specific date.
Why not use the Daily Note? I'm nervous about future proofing.
If, in decades from now, I want to read from my journal, OR if I want to share my journal with my children, do I want it to be riddled with every link I saved and every work meeting I documented?
That's what's always turned me off from using these tools for actual journaling (not, like, reflections and meditations, but actually documenting my life) in the past.
This way, sometime in the future, I could just export the journal objects, and sort them with whatever app exists in the future that still recognizes markdown.

LOGSEQ
Logseq DB Version Testing/Feeback
As mentioned last week, Logseq increased the number of alpha testers who could provide feedback on the Logsew DB Version. Initially it was envisaged to allow 200 new testers a month - this has now changed to 200 a week which is great news as the more people can test it out the quicker it can be polished and released.
If you have not received a DM/ping on Discord to be part of the testers, fear not. There is a queue of over 1,000 users but if you really just want to play around with it and not give feedback, just go to test.logseq.com.
In terms of a completion date “…we don’t expect Logseq DB to be out of alpha in the next 3 months. We’re currently testing the alpha with a growing group of testers, but we don’t know exact dates when we’ll hit certain milestones (like testing local apps, sync, collaboration, etc.).”
Logseq Web Clipper (unofficial) - Easily Save Web Content
OP released a browser extension that lets you save content from the web directly into your Logseq graph.
This extension is a fork of the official Obsidian Web Clipper adapted for Logseq.
Clip Anything: Save entire web pages, main content, or just your highlights.
Customizable Templates: Control how metadata is extracted and formatted.
Smart Integration: Send clips to your daily notes, a new page, or at your cursor position.
Privacy First: Everything is stored locally in Markdown files for offline access.
Chrome Web Store: Logseq Web Clipper. Source Code: https://github.com/j3sch/logseq-clipper
Capacities vs. Logseq: Which Obsidian alternative is better for you?
While Obsidian has been a powerhouse in the world of note-taking, it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution. If you are in the market for an alternative with a different flavor, both Capacities and Logseq offer a unique approach to knowledge management.
Capacities, with its focus on flexible spaces and interconnected ideas, appeals to visual thinkers. Logseq, on the other hand, leverages the power of linked thinking and a robust outliner to organize your thoughts. But only a single tool can be the hub of your knowledge, right? In this post, I will compare Capacities to Logseq in numerous key areas to help you decide which Obsidian alternative is the perfect fit for your needs.

TANA
Android Mobile App - Update
Hi All, from the Slack (Ingrid - Tana team member):
We have strengthened the Android team with another senior Android Native developer from Dec 2nd, so the pace is really picking up! Status right now is that this week we started internal testing and our goal is to release a alpha-version to a small group of test users sometime mid-January, then expand to the community as soon as we are the sure app is working well for a broader audience to test.
Affiliate Webinar news!
lu.ma - The affiliate webinar has unfortunately had to be pushed back, due to illness! It will now take place next Tuesday, the 17th, at 9 pm CET

Tana Fundamentals – Getting Started with Tana
If you are a Tana user or want to learn more about it, then check out this great (new and updated) Tana Fundamentals by Cortex Futura. Lukas goes through the fundamentals of Tana (as of December 2024 so very up to date) and explains them in a clear and concise way.
Great work Lukas and looking forward to the next episodes.
OBSIDIAN
Handwriting In Obsidian?
A plugin for Obsidian that adds the ability to hand write or draw with a stylus between paragraphs in your notes.
Hand write or draw directly between paragraphs in your notes using a digital pen, stylus, or Apple pencil. Useful for handwriting, sketches, scribbles, or even math equations and scientific notation. Runs on the tldraw framework and drawing provides an infinite canvas.
This is an old video, but I only came across this plugin so thought it would be useful to mention.
I want to use Obsidian better
Obsidian feels like a goldmine but I'm using it for barely more than an aggregation of txt docs. I feel there is infinitely more to extract from it, but the learning curve feels hard. Would you have recommendation of tutorials, set ups or use cases to replicate that could help me ramp up?
Second Brain Assistant with Obsidian
Harnessing the profound capabilities of my Second Brain, I’ve always envisioned the integration of an OpenAI model directly into my local files. The universe of open-source solutions beckons.
If you are interested in adding AI into Obsidian, check out this post which provides lots of decent resources.

Orca Notes
Sethyuan, creator of many good Logseq plugins, has recently released Orca Notes which combines the best of both Outliner and Long-form editing. It's in public beta testing now. GitHub for more and download the latest beta release.
Noteey
Another new app that was pointed out to me is Noteey which allows you to Research visually for deeper insights. Noteey is Your Visual Knowledge OS that transforms how you organize and connect your ideas. Offline, secure, and fast.
Heptabase
In this video, Antoine shows the new podcast support feature in Heptabase. Heptabase empowers you to visually make sense of your learning, research, and projects! It can assist you in building a connected personal knowledge management system.
Anytype
Anytype recently held an end of year townhall to provide a summary of 2024 and discuss what they will be working on next. The recording is below as is a summary from a very kind user.
Next update scheduled for 3rd week of December (no specific date given): date as an object & simple formulas (the roadmap lists this as stage 1)
What’s Coming in 2025 Season 1: chats + updated profiles/roles, publish to web, notifications, tag as an object, primitives (updated object creation and applying templates)
Demo of Raycast extension for API
Due to technical difficulties these are not priority for the Anytype team at this time:
Mobile apps features including handwritten notes on tablet (think of mobile apps as companion apps/on-the-go viewing)
RTL language support (however @Razor did mention RTL development for chat)
Embedding images from a URL (security risk for malicious links)
Calendar integrations
Video chat
In development but no specific dates mentioned
New login options in addition to the auto-assigned passphrase
More membership price tiers based on storage
Releasing code to be open-source vs proprietary
No plans to sell Anytype to another company. Vision remains to create a decentralized all-in-one app for thoughts and communication that does not need a cloud in between.
Affine
Affine teases us (again): Looking to expand your workspace with more users? Exciting news coming soon...
